The “Project Safe Trade” zones were set up in the parking lots of the Embrun and Rockland detachment buildings early in the new year. Intended to prevent online fraud or theft, the zones were designed to give residents a comfortable, public space to complete online transactions.

Registered respiratory therapist Heather Houlahan was appointed to the hospital to assist during the pandemic and to assist with other respiratory problems. With 25 years of experience, Houlahan specialized in critical care and cardio-pulmonary medicine.

The club announced that all draws would be postponed until at least February 28. All tickets sold to date and through to the end of February would be eligible for the next draw when it could be held.

Lyne Carmichael was at home with dinner in the oven as she scratched her ticket. “I had so many words and thought I scratched an extra letter,” she said. “When I pulled out my phone and scanned the ticket and saw ‘Big Winner’ I was in shock.”

Rockland’s Morris Village path

Clarence-Rockland council approved a recommendation to apply for federal funding help to build a multi-use path between Amber Street and Caron Street in the Morris Village subdivision in Rockland. The path is one of the capital works projects approved in the 2021 budget, with a projected cost of $205,000. The city will apply under the Active Transportation category of the Canada Infrastructure Program for $150,220, the maximum amount allowed for project support funding. – Gregg Chamberlain

Merit award

Kyle Baird, a teacher at Rockland District High School, is one of six recipients of the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Fall 2020 Director’s Award of Merit. The UCDSB received 49 nominations for the award from district staff, students, and parents. Many nominations highlighted the nominees’ efforts “during the extraordinary circumstances” of the pandemic. – Gregg Chamberlain

UCSDB graduation rate

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is getting closer to meeting its goal of a 90 per cent graduation rate. A four-year summary report presented during the UCDSB January 13 board meeting noted that the overall graduation rate has risen from 73.4 per cent in 2017 to 86.2 per cent for 2020. – Gregg Chamberlain

Affordable housing meeting

The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) welcomed an invitation to meet with Ahmed Hussein, federal minister of families, children, and social development, and discuss federal support programs for local affordable housing needs. UCPR council reviewed a letter January 13 from the office of MP Francis Drouin offering to set up a meeting. UCPR administration will send a notice that council and also the UCPR director of social services would like to meet with the minister when his schedule allows. – Gregg Chamberlain

The library asked residents to send in their favourite recipes through January to share with the wider community and help others get out of a new year cooking slump. The recipes would be gathered and published on the library’s website. Adult services librarian Anne Smith said the scheme would help residents discover fun new recipes to try, or give them the chance to share their beloved meals with others during lockdown.

Mayor Paula Assaly noted during a January 11 council session that she has “several phone calls” from residents about when Ecolomondo is going to start taking used for recycling. Callers told her that they have gone to the company’s Tupper Street location with their old tires and been turned away.

The Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) reported in its year-end summary that more than $27.6 million was provided to agencies like the Prescott-Russell Community Futures Development Corporation to help almost 380 local businesses to deal with the impact of COVID-19 on their operations.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis is doing virtual “house calls” with members of all the municipal and regional councils in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU). The focus of the EOHU’s chief medical health officer is to update community leaders on the status of COVID-19 cases within the Eastern Ontario region after the first year of the pandemic, provide up-to-date information on the status of vaccination plans for the region, and also deliver a simple message for residents in all communities during Ontario’s second lockdown. “Stay home. Stay safe. Save lives,” said Dr. Roumeliotis.
