“It was one of the most exciting and overwhelming feelings I’ve ever experienced,” Kouao said about her win. “Going to where some of the most important battles in Canadian history have happened will give me a deeper understanding of what occurred there, and help me become a better citizen.”

All-Star hockey celebration
The February 14 All-Star game challenge in Metcalfe, between the East and West divisions of the National Capital Junior Hockey League (NCJHL), finished 7-3 for the West. But it was the end-of-season awards presentation that proved the real winning event of the night for two of Prescott-Russell’s member clubs in the NCJHL.
The Vankleek Hill Cougars received their 2019-2020 East Division Champions pennant as part of the evening presentations. The South Grenville Rangers, who were the West Division champions, also received their honours as well as recognition as the first-overall team in the regular season schedule.
Keean McEachern of the Cougars also received the NCJHL Best Defenceman Award for his on-ice work during the 2019-2020 season. Joining him in the honors’ spotlight was Nicolas Castonguay, as the NCJHL nominee for Best Defensive Forward.
Jacob Servant of the Clarence Creek Castors was named Rookie of the Year for the NCJHL this season. Teammate Andrew Hazard was named for the Bédard Family Memorial Award for his contribution to the team and the league.

Salvage logging needed to protect red pine in Larose Forest says UCPR
“We are having issues here and at other sites,” said Steven Hunter, a forester for the United Counties of Prescott and Russell’s planning and forestry department (UCPR). “And we’re not the only ones in Ontario having to deal with this.”
The problem, Hunter said, is that Armillaria root rot and heterobasidium annosum, two diseases that affect the roots of red pines and some other coniferous species, have begun to make their presence felt in the grounds of the community forest. Indications are the diseases became established at least a decade ago, but their impact on the Larose Forest profile is starting to become apparent now.
