Members of the Hawkesbury Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 472), representatives for the OPP and the Town of Hawkesbury, along with several residents gathered at the Hawkesbury Cenotaph at the eleventh hour November 11 for a quiet Remembrance Day ceremony, while also observing the health safety guidelines for wearing masks and practising social distancing.
Similar small gatherings took place in other communities in the Prescott-Russell region and across Canada. Many people stayed home and watched their local Remembrance Day ceremony online or the national ceremony televised from the National War Memorial in Ottawa

The Ontario government announced on Friday that the Eastern Ontario Health Unit would be placed in the yellow zone from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday. The category, which was one higher than the base “green” zone, was for areas with a weekly incidence rate of between 10 and 39.9 cases per 100,000 people and emphasised targeted enforcement, fines and education to prevent further COVID transmission.
Police said the suspects entered the fenced-in area of the Home Hardware on Cameron Street on the evening of Sunday, October 25. The thieves stole several items during the break-in.
The Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT) hearing begins Monday, November, on two appeals related to a zoning request from Colacem Canada Inc. The company wants to build a cement plant on its property near the Village of L’Orignal.
The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) approved the rezoning request but Champlain Township, where the village is located, has rejected it because of concerns over environmental impact, heavy traffic congestion, and other issues.
The company has appealed the township’s rejection of its zoning request while Action Champlain, a local community group, has appealed the UCPR’s approval of the rezoning. Now LPAT will hear arguments from all parties on the issue.

The Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment has set up a “community safe zone” in which people can agree to meet and swap items bought online. Set up in two spaces in the detachment’s front parking lot, the zone is well-lit and has nearby cameras to give buyers or sellers peace of mind.

“As far as I’m concerned, they’re just calling for an accident to happen,” said Mayor Paula Assaly of Hawkesbury. “They’re just making it worse, rather than better.”
Twenty-six new cases were reported in the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) catchment area over the weekend, including 17 in Prescott-Russell. Most of those new infections could be traced to existing cases, or were detected in ongoing outbreaks at long-term care homes.
The announcement brought the COVID-related death toll at the residence to nine, three weeks after an outbreak was first declared at the Hawkesbury facility. No new positive cases were reported at the residence on Friday, with 134 confirmed since October 9. Seventy-two cases – in 45 residents and 27 employees – were active, while another 53 – in 27 residents and 26 employees – had been resolved.
