Police and other emergency personnel were called out at about 6 a.m., Saturday, December 5, to the scene of an accident on County Road 17, a short distance west of the Montée Lajeunesse intersection on the western end of the Village of Alfred.

A preliminary report from the OPP confirms that a collision occurred involving a heavy transport truck and a car. At least one person was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. A second person has non-life-threatening injuries and there is no report if that person was taken to hospital.

No other details are available at present. The OPP Traffic Collision Investigation Unit is now at the scene.

Roadblocks are set up where County Road 17 intersects with Boundary Road east of Plantagenet and Montée Lajeunesse in Alfred. All traffic is being detoured at those points while investigators are on the scene.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) started an investigation in June in response to a complaint about threatening messages. Officers began investigating at an East Hawkesbury campground on County Road 19.

Rozon was charged last year with defrauding the municipality of $375,825 over a nine-year period, from 2008 to 2017 when she was the municipal clerk and treasurer.

She retired in June 2017 after a routine audit by Deloitte determined that $53,000 was missing from municipal coffers.

That money was repaid and the municipality did not pursue criminal charges at the time. Further investigation later showed that varying amounts of municipal money, ranging from $500 to more than $61,000, had also gone missing over the nine-year period from 2008 to 2017 while Rozon held her positions with the township.

 That resulted in 25 charges of fraud and related offences filed against Rozon in July 7 2019. The case has continued through the court calendar until today when she was expected to take a plea.

Parks and Recreation Director Ken St-Denis presented Alfred-Plantagenet council with a plan to maintain all five of the municipal outdoor skating rinks during the 2020-2021 winter season while meeting concerns for pandemic health safety for both staff and residents.

The provincial government released guidelines for the holidays on Wednesday, one month before Christmas. Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, said local health officials would release addition guidelines in the coming days. He urged families to restrict in-person celebrations to members of their household, and encouraged virtual connections with others.

Teams in the National Capital Junior Hockey League (NCJHL) met earlier this month and agreed to start the regular season on January 8. The shortened season would feature 18 games, followed by playoffs in late March or early April. The league expected to mandate non-contact play at the start of the season, which would be reviewed based on the COVID situation.
