The COVID-19 pandemic is aggravating the humanitarian emergencies in Haiti and Yemen

In Yemen, COVID-19 has been another wound to the country’s ongoing food insecurity, due to which the UN food relief agency states 10 million Yemenis are “one step away from famine”. The virus has led to a dramatic reduction in foreign aid provided to Yemen, as most countries are self focused on the well-being of their own citizens. The negative impacts on both Haiti and Yemen’s food security, hygiene and sanitation, and health services have been dire and deadly.

Health equity has never been more important than it is right now. Proud as we are of our global efforts and international reputation, Canada can do more to ensure global access to medicines to fight COVID19, as well as growing humanitarian crises across the globe. Lending a helping hand not only supports Canadian interests in security, trade, migration, health and economic stability, but supports human dignity. We need to invest 1% of our COVID-19 response efforts in global aid, and should commit to a lasting increase in Canadian Aid through Official Development Assistance so that vulnerable countries with humanitarian crises have the services they need, and no one is left behind.

  • Fraud a growing concern during pandemic

Fraud a growing concern during pandemic

Fraudsters often pose as collection agencies or financial service companies offering loans, debt consolidation and other services. Scams include unsolicited texts, emails and calls requesting urgent action or payment. They may seem to come from a financial institution, but be wary of this type of request because financial institutions will never ask for personal information, login credentials or account information by email or text.

Unless you have contacted your financial institution, you cannot be certain that a call, email or text you receive is really from your financial institution. If you are concerned, contact your financial institution. And to protect yourself, make sure you never provide your personal or financial information by email or text.

Also, do not click on any links or attachments in unsolicited texts and emails. It is always best to enter your financial institution’s website into your browser yourself.

What to do if you fall victim to financial fraud

If you are a victim of a scam, it is important to immediately inform your bank and credit card companies, if appropriate, to see whether any accounts have been opened in your name or whether your existing accounts have been tampered with. If at any time your accounts or credit cards have been compromised, change your password.

By reporting the fraud, you will save other consumers. It is important to report the incident to the local police. You can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or fill out an online report.

  • Tips for beginners during the pandemic

Tips for beginners during the pandemic

To reduce the risk of injury, Jeff Grimshaw, a Canadian certified pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada, shares these tips:

    Replace your shoes regularly

With each use, the support of your shoes gradually wears down. There are many factors in determining when your shoes are worn out, including shoe condition, tread wear and midsole compression Even if your shoes are sitting in a closet, the soles will deteriorate over time. As a rule of thumb, aim to replace your running shoes after one year or 500 – 1000 kilometres to ensure they continue to support proper foot movements without stress or strain.

    Wear orthotics in athletic shoes

Harper says some people who have been prescribed orthotics wear them only in their daily shoes. However, it’s vital to wear orthotics in your athletic shoes as well to ensure your feet are getting the support they need to function correctly.

Choose shoes designed for your specific activity

Not all sneakers are created equally. Different types of athletic shoes are designed for the way your feet move in specific activities. Examples of athletic shoes are walking shoes, running shoes and sport-specific shoes such as basketball or court shoes. Each type of shoe is designed to give you the necessary support and control for specific activities to help optimize your performance and minimize potential injuries.

    Don’t ignore foot pain

Often, pain in your feet can be easily addressed with changes to your shoes or by starting to wear orthotics to provide additional support. However, sometimes foot pain can signal more serious issues. If you are experiencing prolonged pain or discomfort in your feet, schedule a consultation with a certified pedorthist for a thorough examination and treatment plan. Many are reopening their practices or seeing patients through virtual consultations.

    Start off slow

While it’s commendable to want to give 110 per cent to your new activity right away, your body and feet need time to adjust to any new fitness regimen. Gradually build up the length and frequency of your activities to allow your body to ease in.

  • Creative ways to help kids succeed in school

Creative ways to help kids succeed in school

Use creative methods for retention. Reading off a page and trying to memorize facts is not a very engaging way to learn material. Try more exciting methods when studying with your child, like acting out history or using songs and acronyms to memorize terms. Switching up the way your child retains knowledge will make information stand out more in their memory and keep them interested.

Use play through learning tools. Educational computer programs, games and toys can help kids learn through play by building off topics being taught in class and continuing the learning process after school. For example, Osmo uses tablets to merge tactile exploration with technology, introducing your child to coding and STEAM topics in a fun way.

Award the effort, not the outcome. Set goals at the beginning of the year for your child, but reward the effort they put into working towards them. We often reward success in objective terms, like whether they get an A, not success based on improvement. But by rewarding your child on their personal growth, like if they bump up a C to a B, you set them up to not be discouraged if their efforts don’t translate into top marks.
