    Les employés du SCFP manifestent devant le bureau de Sarrazin

    « Ils nous enlèvent nos droits de manifester localement et centralement, et ils veulent imposer une nouvelle convention collective », a déclaré Gaetanne Caron, présidente de la section locale 4155 du SCFP, « C’est pourquoi nous devons manifester. C’est de l’intimidation. Nous n’allons pas l’accepter ».

    Les travailleurs des sections locales 5335, 4154, 4155 et 5678 du SCFP se sont tenus devant le bureau de M. Sarrazin, brandissant des drapeaux et des pancartes faites maison.

    Les revendications du SCFP

    Le gouvernement a offert une augmentation annuelle de deux pour cent pour tous les travailleurs dont le salaire annuel est inférieur à 40 000 $ par année et une augmentation de 1,25 pour cent pour tous les autres. La nouvelle entente prévoit une augmentation annuelle de 2,5 % pour tous les travailleurs dont le salaire annuel est inférieur à 43 000 $ et une augmentation de 1,5 % pour tous les autres.

    Le SCFP réclame une augmentation de 11,7 %, des heures supplémentaires au double du taux de rémunération normal et 30 minutes de temps de préparation payé pour les aides-enseignants et les éducateurs de la petite enfance.

    Les travailleurs de soutien visés par l’entente sont le personnel d’entretien, le personnel de bureau et de bureautique des écoles, les aides-enseignants, les éducateurs de la petite enfance, le personnel des bibliothèques et le personnel des technologies de l’information. En vertu de la législation proposée, les travailleurs pourraient recevoir une amende de 4 000 dollars par jour en cas de grève.

    GFL sponsorise un nouveau sentier récréatif

    Jean-Philippe Laliberté, directeur général des opérations d’enfouissement et de la conformité pour GFL Environmental, s’est engagé à verser 250 000 $ pour l’aménagement du sentier Brisson. Il s’agit du premier commanditaire important du projet de loisirs pluriannuel de la municipalité.

    « C’est avec une grande fierté que j’annonce aujourd’hui la contribution de notre entreprise pour soutenir le développement d’un sentier pédestre et d’un projet de sanctuaire d’oiseaux, ici à Casselman, a dit M. Laliberté. Au fil des ans, nous avons développé une relation étroite avec la municipalité et aujourd’hui, avec ce partenariat, nous voulons le faire de façon encore plus concrète en participant à la réalisation d’un projet qui aurait un impact positif sur la qualité de vie des citoyens de Casselman. »

    Les efforts de la municipalité pour développer un sentier et un parc près de High Falls, sur la rivière Nation Sud, ont débuté en 2018, à la fin du mandat du précédent conseil municipal. L’aménagement du sentier est depuis longtemps un objectif du maire Lafleur et de son conseil. Le fait d’avoir pu obtenir le financement avant la fin de son mandat a été un moment de fierté.

    « J’espérais le faire sur une période de quatre ans. Je ne savais pas si cela allait se produire, a commenté M. Lafleur. Donc, nous vous remercions beaucoup. C’est un bon début. »

    La mairesse élue Geneviève Lajoie est également fière du nouveau développement dans sa communauté, soulignant l’importance de l’environnement naturel pour Casselman.

    « Nous devons travailler ensemble si nous voulons réussir à protéger notre environnement et à profiter de la belle nature qui nous entoure, a déclaré Mme Lajoie. Je remercie sincèrement GFL pour sa générosité envers Casselman et ce merveilleux projet. »

    Casselman a approuvé un montant initial de 225 000 $ en 2021 pour commencer à travailler sur le projet en trois phases de 1,5 million de dollars. La première phase, qui doit être achevée cet automne, consiste à réparer la rue Brisson jusqu’au portail du lot 24, à l’extrémité nord de Brisson, à construire une clôture et à agrandir le stationnement pour accueillir vingt voitures.

    La phase deux du projet, qui doit commencer en janvier 2023, verra la majorité des travaux achevés. La municipalité installera des passerelles, une aire de repos et une plateforme d’observation des oiseaux dans le parc. La deuxième phase devrait être achevée en octobre 2023. Une campagne locale de collecte de fonds sera lancée en 2023.

    Enfin, la dernière phase permettra de promouvoir le sentier, de développer une programmation culturelle et touristique et d’établir un comité de citoyens pour soutenir la gestion du parc. La finalisation de toutes les phases du projet est prévue pour octobre 2024. Une fois le projet terminé, la municipalité espère attirer 3 000 visiteurs par an entre mai et octobre.

    Residents of Russell Township turned out for PumpKIN Fest on October 30, crowding into Yahoo Park for a day of spooks, scars, tricks, and treats. The event was a huge success according to organizer Eric Greer, with over 500 people showing up to scream, laugh, and carve themselves a pumpkin.

    “PumpKIN Fest was ab absolutely daBOOlous event!”, Greer said in a Facebook post. “Thank you to our amazing sponsors, and a big thank you to all of the local businesses and community members who contributed to and supported bringing this event to the community.”

    The event, a collaboration between Russell Township and the Kin Club of Russell, was created by Eric Greer and his partner because there wasn’t really any big Halloween event planned. Halloween is their favorite holiday, so instead of being sad that there wasn’t anything planned for the holiday, they decided to plan something themselves. They wanted to lead by example and show that the township can support greater community activities.

    “PumpKIN Fest is about family, fun, and community,” said Greer. “It’s giving members of our Township the opportunity to support local development while making great memories and connecting.”

    Greer hopes that PumpKIN Fest will become an annual event in the Township, celebrating Halloween and the resilience of the residents. This year’s PumpKIN Fest donated all proceeds to expanding the splash-pads in Embrun and Russell; who knows what part of the community next year’s will help?

    First play since pandemic for RAPA

     

    It’s been a hard couple of years for everyone, but in-person entertainment groups have had it particularly bad. Now, for the first time in nearly three years, the Russell Association for the Performing Arts (RAPA) is staging a play called “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”. Director Debbie Guilbeault said it’s been fantastic to be back in person, but also challenging.

    “There was a lot of focus on restaurants and retail stores of people out of work, but a lot of actors and people who worked in the industry as gig workers were the first out and the last to come back,” Guilbeault said. “It’s been really nice to get people involved in that again.”

    Guilbeault described the play as a hilarious musical organized into a series of vignettes exploring different stages of relationships. The play is normally done with four actors taking on multiple roles, but this production will feature six. This leaves a little wiggle room in case one or two people fall ill and can’t perform.

    “It’s actually the longest-running off-Broadway play,” said Guilbeault. “I had done it once before as the director at Ottawa Little Theatre, and coming back after the pandemic, the group didn’t want to take anything on that involved expensive sets.”

    The play is set to open at 2 p.m. on November 12 at Russell High School, although the venue may need to change due to the potential education strike. The play will run for a week, starting at 7:30 p.m. after the first matinee performance. Tickets cost $25 regularly, and $18 for students and those 55 and over.

    Tyler Proulx a été le meilleur marqueur du match avec quatre buts. Colic Leclerc a ajouté deux buts au total de Saint-Isidore et a aussi aidé sur un autre but.  

    Jacob Levac a marqué un point pour Saint-Isidore et a récolté une mention d’aide sur un autre but. Justin Sabourin a également marqué pour Saint-Isidore. Olivier Chagnon et Cedric Hughes ont fourni des passes pour marquer des buts pendant le match. Mathieu Sauvé a gardé le filet.  

    Les Aigles sont à Clarence Creek samedi pour affronter les Castors. Dimanche soir à domicile, ils accueillent les Rockets de North Dundas.

    Education support workers may go on strike

    The government offered a two-per-cent annual increase for all workers with annual wages under $40,000 per year and a 1.25-per-cent increase for all others. The new deal would give a 2.5-per-cent annual increase to all workers with annual wages under $43,000 per year and a 1.5-per-cent increase for all others.

    CUPE has been demanding an 11.7 per cent increase, overtime at double the regular pay rate and 30 minutes of paid prep time for educational assistants and early childcare educators.

    The support workers included in the proposed deal are maintenance staff, school office and clerical staff, educational assistants, early childhood educators, library workers, and information technology staff. The workers could receive a $4000 a day fine for striking under the proposed legislation.

    “This is an appalling display of contempt for workers’ rights, for the collective bargaining process, and for the workers who look after our kids and keep our schools running,” stated CUPE National President Mark Hancock. “Going full nuclear and threatening the lowest-paid education workers in the province with fines and the Notwithstanding Clause is just disgraceful, even for this premier and this education minister.”

    Experts consulted by national media explained that the use of the Notwithstanding Clause by the provincial government for contract negotiations is dangerous for democracy and sets a precedent for future negotiations.

    Effect on Schools

    A possible strike would affect all schools in Prescott-Russell. The Conseil Scolaire de District Catholique de l’Est-Ontarien plans to keep its schools open for the time being. “However, it is possible that if this situation were to continue, there would be repercussions on the proper functioning of our schools. It is therefore likely, for public health and sanitary reasons, that learning will continue virtually.” said Lyne Racine, director of education of the CSDCEO.

    The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has decided to close its doors if the CUPE decides to move forward with the strike. “CUPE makes up approximately 25 per cent of the UCDSB workforce and holds critical positions that support our students and school system. If CUPE participates in any kind of labour action or protest that takes staff out of schools, all UCDSB schools will be closed to students” said UCDSB Director Ron Ferguson.

    The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) will close all schools to students for safety reasons starting Friday November 4th if an agreement is not reached by Thursday November 3rd. The Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (CEPEO) will also be switching to online learning if a strike occurs.

    Marilyn Bergeron, 24 ans, a disparu depuis 14 ans et sa famille de Québec pense qu’elle pourrait être quelque part en Ontario.

    Mme Bergeron a été vue pour la dernière fois le 17 février 2008, lorsqu’elle a quitté la maison de Québec où elle vivait avec ses parents, M. Michel Bergeron et Mme Andrée Béchard. Elle a dit qu’elle allait faire une courte promenade et qu’elle serait de retour dans quelques heures. Quatorze ans plus tard, sa famille attend toujours son retour.

    Une enquête policière a permis de recueillir des preuves sur les déplacements de Mme Bergeron après son départ de la maison, jusqu’au moment où une caméra de télévision en circuit fermé a capté des images d’elle essayant de retirer de l’argent d’une caisse populaire ABM. Depuis lors, il n’y a pas eu d’autres informations sur ses allées et venues.

    Il a été signalé que Mme Bergeron a été aperçue en Ontario, dans la région de Hawkesbury, mais aucune preuve n’a été apportée. La famille croit qu’elle pourrait être en Ontario et rencontrera les médias le vendredi 28 octobre à Hawkesbury pour expliquer leur raisonnement. M. Marc Bellemare, un avocat de Québec, sera également présent. Il travaille avec la famille pour trouver des informations permettant de découvrir l’endroit où se trouve Mme Bergeron ou ce qui lui est arrivé.

    The 15th annual Gala of Excellence came to a close on October 15, organised by the Prescott Russell Community Development Corporation with the theme of Oscar Night. It was held at the Caledonia Community Hall in St-Bernardin, where 280 guests gathered to celebrate the success of small businesses in the region.

    « It is important to stipulate that every two years, the Gala of Excellence adapts to the economic reality and the evolution of businesses and entrepreneurs in Prescott-Russell,” said Luc Filion, Chairperson of the Gala of Excellence Committee, “, to pay tribute and reward those who have managed to stand out through their passion, their development, their community involvement, their loyalty and undoubtedly their resilience.”

    Studio Shanthaly of Embrun was awarded quite the distinction on award night, winning both Woman Entrepreneur Award and Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Sisters and co-owners Nathalie and Chantale said that winning both has really boosted morale in the studio.

    “We weren’t seen as one of the real big businesses, so winning those awards really showed us, wow we’re doing a great job,” said Chantale. “It gives us the confidence to go forward and work harder on our business. In two years, we’ll be able to start our other business, which is the school of Hair.”

    When asked if they would do anything differently if given the chance, Chantale said there was only the hindsight of experience.

    “The only thing that I regret is, when we opened up and I was like 21 years old, there’s lots of stuff that we’ve learned throughout the years that I wish I knew when I was young.”

    Studio Shanthaly is looking forward to the next Gala in 2024, where they hope to have grown even more and win another award.
