MVA fatality

The Hawkesbury OPP detachment is asking for help to conclude an investigation of a fatal traffic accident July 31 on County Road 17 between Champlain Township and Hawkesbury. Two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision that claimed the life of Momtaz Francis, 73, of Ottawa, who was driving one of the vehicles. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has relevant information can call the OPP at 613-632-2729. – Gregg Chamberlain

Livestock exchange death

A 55-year-old man from Champlain Township died as a result of injuries following a workplace accident involving a bull at the Vankleek Hill Livestock Exchange, July 27, around 5:30 p.m. Police were notified of the incident July 28 at 4 p.m. and conducted a preliminary investigation. The Ontario Regional Coroner’s Office and the Ministry of Labour have now taken over the investigation. The name of the deceased has not been released. Anyone with information concerning the incident can call the OPP at 613-632-2729. – Gregg Chamberlain

Mystery seeds

Mystery seeds from China are showing up in the mail of some residents of Eastern Ontario. Police is warning recipients to be careful. Anyone who receives a packet of seeds that he or she did not order is asked to report the matter to the Canada Food Inspection Agency at 613-773-8660, who will arrange for its collection. – Gregg Chamberlain

L’audience d’appel de la cimenterie est toujours en cours

Michael Attfield, 22, of Russell, was pronounced dead after he was airlifted to hospital for treatment of his injuries. Several agencies are now involved with investigating the circumstances surrounding Attfield’s death.

Residents of Clarence-Rockland will be able to go to the municipal office again and get some in-person help for some of their needs. City Hall reopens Tuesday, August 11, to the public but only for confirmed appointments.

The Russell County OPP detachment in Embrun received a call 9 a.m., August 6, about a suspicious person in the Castlebeau Street neighbourhood in Embrun.

Calypso Valcartier Group, the Québec-based company which owns Calypso and another water theme park located in Québec, tried and failed to get an exemption from the list of businesses barred from opening as part of the Stage 3 part of Phase 2 of the Ontario economic recovery plan for the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. That list includes amusement parks and water-theme parks.
